Homework at Cromer Road Primary

We believe that homework is an important part of the learning process for our children. We have a clear homework policy that is available on the website at: Homework Policy 2024. We are aware that occasionally, homework causes anxiety amongst some families and that defeats the objective of this policy. This is an outline with a few key points and expectations to try to alleviate this stress.

There is currently no government guidance on homework. At Cromer Road Primary, we believe that children should not be expected to spend significantly long periods of time on homework to ensure that the well-being of our children is not compromised at the weekend. We endeavour to organise homework activities so that our children enjoy and consolidate their learning.

We pride ourselves on being a school that listens and values feedback from parents and carers. We consulted with our parent representatives from each class and our School Council as well as our teachers. below is some key information:

1. Homework is a school expectation
2. Home work grids can be found on the class pages each half term
3. Homework will be monitored by the class teacher
4. Each activity will be labelled with the week the homework should be completed
5. The number of homework activities will coincide with the number of weeks per half term which on average will include: two Maths, two English, two project pieces (one of which will be Science)
6. SumDog will be used more regularly to consolidate learning in Maths. Please see the link which has some information to help parents and carers: What is Sumdog?
7. The Google classroom will be used side by side with the homework grid
8. Maths activities will vary between a calculation-focused activity and a problem-solving activity- for both of these types of activities answers and solutions will be shared on the Google Classroom so that you can support
9. Models for the steps in Maths to solve calculations will also be shared on the Google Classroom. Genre features for English writing pieces will also be shared on the Google Classroom
10. The children are rewarded for doing their homework, effort is acknowledged too with certificates. 

We cannot stress too highly the importance of regular reading at home; this should be encouraged on a daily basis, particularly during holiday periods.  We do see a marked dip in reading skills/attainment after school holidays. Reading is a necessary and enjoyable activity that can be shared as a family, should you need guidance on this please see your child’s teacher. Please note that there are no consequences for not completing homework but we ask that parents support us with encouraging their children to complete as many pieces of their homework. Whilst we cannot enforce homework, we would like to instill good learning habits so that the children are ready for the next stage of their education.

We strongly encourage parents to get involved in supporting their child’s homework activities. It is always great to see parents getting involved and co-creating pieces of work, such as DT projects. However, we would advise parents to also build independent skills too. As your child gets older, the amount of independence in completing tasks increases, however, parents can still share finished products with their child, and give feedback as this is very important for the child. 

We aim to give feedback on homework promptly. It will let your child know how well they have done and how they can improve next time. This may not always happen through written comments from the teacher. Sometimes work will be discussed in lessons or teachers may give individual verbal feedback. Children will continue to be awarded certificates for their homework. Provisions for children with SEND will be provided to ensure that all of our children succeed. A differentiated set of activities will be provided for some children with special educational needs to ensure they can access them.
